World Lupus Day
May is Lupus Awareness Month…. and May 10th is World Lupus Day. A day where everyone bands together for this horrible disease. A day that focuses on the need for research into the causes and cure for Lupus, the need for healthcare, and mainly to bring awareness. Lupus can be invisible for some, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t aggressively attacking. There are so many symptoms of Lupus, and so many different ways that it can attack one’s body. It can attack your skin, organs or both, joints, brain, everything. It’s a terrible disease, and I pray that someday a cure is found. Or at least, treatment on a less harsh scale.
I love that there is World Lupus Day, and an entire month dedicated towards awareness, because it brings public attention to the disease. Also, we throw up the #LHandSign to spread awareness as well. I’m very open about my disease and experiences over the years and I’m always discussing it. I feel the only way people will learn about Lupus isn’t just by 1 month of awareness, although beneficial, but by stories of patients who suffer with it every day. I don’t pretend that this is an easy disease. I’ve struggled so much, but I am thankful for the place I’m at in my life right now with my health. There are many people who are not as fortunate as me with their health and remission right now, Lupus or any other disease. Remember that everyone you meet is struggling in some aspect of their lives. Just because you can’t “see” someone’s illness, don’t assume that it’s not as bad as it really is. Be aware, be genuine, be compassionate.
